Call me Ishmael.
No, not really.
So I thought it would be a fun idea to list the nicknames that have stuck with me through my life and the reason/story as to why I got them. They’re in no particular order, just what comes to mind. :)
Chan
So, no mystery to how I got this nickname. Short for Channing. I’m sure other people have called me this, but the first person I acknowledged and remembered calling me this was Jean. I note that Thien-tu calls me this too. I don’t particularly like this nickname, but I don’t mind it.
Superchan
Just because I like superheroes, and I mainly dig Superman.<3
Jackie
Ooh this is old haha. Kristen, Calvin, and Jeremy mostly called me this - not in real life, but when we wrote letters to each other. This came from Jackie Chan(ning). I’m not sure why.. Because I did Martial Arts? No one calls me this anymore though.
Toaster
This one’s story is my favorite. I was in a room with Esther Kang, Esther Lo, and Judy. We were talking about Kang’s nickname, Kangster. We started saying what if we did that to all our last names, Esther Lo would be Lo-ster, Judy would be Wangster, and I would be To-ster. Then we figured out it sounded like toaster and the name just stuck from then on. I think the only people that call me by this are Kang, Judes, Chow, and Jon Wong.
Toe
I THINK this started with Jenny Dai, but I’m not sure, since it IS my last name, anyone could have come up with it. But from what I remember, we figured out that our last names made Todai (the restaurant) and so from then on, I called her Dai and she called me Toe. Random people call me this.. Jenny, sometimes Judes, sometimes Yosh.
Chanster
This came from Luke Yu. Completely random haha, he just started calling me it one day. Haven’t seen him in forever though, so I haven’t been called this in several years.
Ling
Mmm this started with two different people. Chantale and I found out we both had a “Ling” in our Chinese names (different characters though), so we called ourselves Ling twins. Then we just started calling each other Ling. Apart from that, Torrence started calling me that.. I’m not sure how it started though?
Fatty
Paul! He is my fatty buddy :) We make fun of each other and he’s the only person I’ll let call me fat with no hard feelings (; I think it’s funny when people hear him call me that and yell at him for calling a girl fat. We just make fun of each other saying we’re extremely overweight. Not to sound conceited, but I think because we know we’re not, then it’s okay to do this. We noted that if one of us gains a lot of weight, we wouldn’t use this nickname anymore HAHA.
Punkkid
Before Yoshua and I started dating, there was one day that he decided to dress emo (guyliner, tight jeans and all hehe). I started calling him emokid and apparently I dressed “punk” and so he called me punkkid.
Kid
From the above mentioned nickname, we got lazy and just started calling each other kid for short.
Chanting Toes
This was in middle school when Daniel Yim was making fun of my name. He would always taunt me saying “Chanting Toes! Chanting Toes!” Aside from him, Zeal Mungra caught on to the name and called me that too. Or just Chanting for short.
Wolf
Newest nickname of all of these. Since Jewel told me that my name, Channing, means Young Wolf (which I’d love to be a nickname, but it’s so impractical to use (; ), Yoshua calls me Wolf once in a while. I like it because I like wolves. :)
Well, that’s all I can think of. It was fun reminiscing and I guess I can look back at this entry if I ever forget why/how I got labeled these names.
